MERITS AND FLAWS:

Ambidextrous
Soft-Hearted

Description: 5'8", medium build. Black hair, brown eyes.
Sinhalese / Chinese mix -- has caramel-coloured skin. Wears an
expression of perpetual bemusement or distraction.

Wears well-made, albeit nondescript clothing -- greys and browns
a favourite. Leather shoes. Has a small backpack, containing
several books and some of his foci.

Born to a middle-aged family in Malaysia, as Mark daCosta.
Awakened at the age of 21, in a back alley in New York, when was
assaulted by a group of thugs. Managed to escape by somehow
disruption the head thug's heart.

Was found by a Batini Murshid, who thought him a few skills
before revealing himself as a member of the Ahl-i-Batin. After
several months of training and settling his worldly affairs, left
to Mecca, and join the Ikhwan-al-Tawhid, under the training of
Aziz Akhtar.

Aziz realized that this new student was looking for something,
and realized soon enough that he would be better off letting him
go on some kind of quest. So, deciding quickly, Aziz ordered
Mark Hassan, as he now knows himself, to go back to his home, and
to 'seek out the secrets of Correspondence, because you're too
damn thick to get it.'

Well, Mark did that. He's now back in New York, trying to finish
his degree, after telling everyone that he had been on a
'spiritual journey'. Everyone has taken his conversion rather
well, considering.

He's never been too keen about religion, and he sees Islam as...
well, somewhat practical. He could live with it.

He's met up with a SoE member, who considers Mark an interested
Sleeper, or a borderline Sorcerer. Mark doesn't want to disabuse
his notions. As thanks for a bit of help Mark had given him a
couple of months ago, the Etherite decided to give him a small
gift -- access to the Digital Web.

Seeing how he reacted, the Etherite began to get excited,
believing Mark had Awakened spontaneously (never knowing that he
had done so, months before). After trying to get Mark to join
his Tradition (Mark said no, politely), the Etherite decided to
rig up something small and portable for him to enter the Digital
Web...

Family:

 - Desmond daCosta, father, Architect (51): from Sri Lanka. Very
middle-class catholic.
 - Laura Chua, mother, Nurse (47): from KL. Former nurse. Very
middle-class catholic, too :)
 - Laura daCosta, elder sibling, housewife (30): married a nice
bloke from Johor Baru, an enginner. Has a son, Desmond Jr.
 - Nathan daCosta, younger sibling (21), student: in local
college, studying for marketing. Drives a beat-up Nissan and has
a steady girlfriend. Dyes his hair blond.
 - Newton Chua, cousin (28), doctor: married. Has kids. Has a
practice, making lots of money. Only mentioned here because his
parents harp Mark about "not being like Newton". Dull as hell.

PARADIGM:

LIFE: That's the easiest for me, to be honest. I can concentrate
real hard, and sometimes, my body changes. I *think* I have good
control over it, and I'm beginning to realize that my body is
very much related to all the other forms of life around me. Hmm.
I can see how this can lead to Unity.

MIND: Life is the seat my Mind rests on. Interesting. I'm
beginning to sense, almost the multiplicity of Minds around me.
I've probed a few Murshids -- they spar with me a little, and I'm
beginning to see how different they all are, and how similar
things are. Hmm. More Unity at work.

FORCES: Isn't Mind a sort of Force? Or at least, composed of
little pieces of forces, interacting with one another. It's so
confusing.

MATTER: Read once that matter was condensed energy. That's
interesting, but I've never looked that at that in depth, yet.

PRIME: The fabled Energy of the Unity. But it's not like Forces.
It's very strange. Like, how can you get any simpler than
Forces?

SPIRIT: I don't understand how this and Mind are connected
together. Is Mind and Spirit like Matter and Forces -- one real
and simple, the other ephemereal and complicated? So which is
which?

TIME & CORRESPONDENCE: Heh. A Batini who doesn't understand
Correspondence. The other Murids would laugh, sure, but I keep
thinking that these two are linked together somehow. A Murshid
mentioned once, that all places are the same -- and that THAT is
one of the secrets of Unity. Really? Hmm.

ENTROPY: The Masters don't approve of anyone who tries and
understand this Sphere. I keep thinking, "But even Death is the
return to the Unity." But I'm missing SOMETHING. I wish I knew
what...

UNITY: ...I just wish I knew how it all added up together.

STEREOTYPES:

TRADITIONS: They're... interesting? Very argumentative, but
interesting. The Murshids seem very disappointed with them,
though -- knowing our history with them, I can understand why.

ORDER OF HERMES: They've got a great understanding on how
symbology works. Shame about the amount of politicking and
grandstanding they do.

VIRTUAL ADEPTS: They've got a great understanding on what
Correspondence is all about. Shame about the amount of pol--
hey, waitaminute.

SONS OF ETHER: They're great conversationalists. If you're in
the mood to listen, that is -- don't interject when you're
talking to one: I think they consider it impolite.

AKASHIC BROTHERHOOD: Quiet fellows. Very obscure. Hard to talk
to.

EUTHANATOS: They *smell* a little strange. Very intimidating.
Funny, though -- almost all I met seem... unsually kind.
Compassionate, I suppose. But 'magical killers' being kind?
Hmm.

CELESTIAL CHORISTERS: Good to be around, but not exactly good to
be a friend. They've got good vibes, but that's about it, I
suppose. Drunk on the One, but not seeing very far into it.
Like the Darwushin. Hmm. Very much like.

CULT OF ECSTASY: No, I don't take drugs. Nor drink. Nor smoke.
It's cool. Dance? Well... um... okay.

DREAMSPEAKER: Met an Aboriginal 'speaker once. He was...
distant. But a nice bloke. We shared a pipe, I guess, but he
told me the spirits didn't like me. Told him, no worries, mate,
I can understand that. I'll go. He said the spirits changed
their minds, I could stay. Weird guy.

VERBANA: Wow. Wow. Intense vibes. Blood and sacrifice. Life
and Nature. Geez. Geez. What ARE these guys?

HOLLOW ONES: Hmmph. I don't say much to them. Style over
substance, though. Damn style over substance.

TECHNOCRACY: Brrr. Frighteningly inhuman. Okay, the ones in the
orange jumpsuits can be civil. But piece of advice? Stay away,
stay away. Let the Murshids kill them if need be.

ORPHANS: Met a few. They range from nice to sociopathic. Can't
really pin them down, really.
